Happy birthday, Rafi Saab

Today’s Mohammad Rafi’s 85th birthday… Here’s raising a toast to the all-time great singer whose career spanned for more than four decades…

Top Ten songs according to me:

 Solo

Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam- Mere Mehboob

Chaudvin Ka Chand- Chaudvin ka Chand

 Dard E Dil- Karz

Main Zindagi Ka Saath- Hum Dono

 Din Dhal Jaaye- Guide

Aye Duniya ke Rakhwale- Baiju Bawra

Dil Ka Bhanwar- Tere Ghar Ke Saamne

Yaad Na Jaye- Dil Ek Mandir

Gar Tum Bhula Na Doge- Yakeen

 Aye Husn Zara- Mere Mehboob

Duets

Abhi Na Jao Chodkar- Hum Dono (with Asha Bhosale)

Sau Saal Pehle- Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hain (with Lata Mangeshkar)

Hum Aapki Aankhon Mein- Pyaasa (with Geeta Dutt)

Jo Vaada Kiya – Taj Mahal (with Lata Mangeshkar)

Teri Duniye Se Door- Zabak (with Lata Mangeshkar)

Woh Jab Yaad Aye- Parasmani (with Lata Mangeshkar)

Dil Pukare – Jewel Thief (with Lata Mangeshkar)

Tasveer Tere Dil – Maya ((with Lata Mangeshkar)

Paon Choo Lene Do- Taj Mahal (with Lata Mangeshkar)

Main Pyaar Ka Raahi Hoon – Ek Musafir Ek Haseena (with Asha Bhosale)- Interestingly, this song was never picturised in the film.

It was unfortunate that his career went downhill, after Kishore Kumar upstaged him, following the success of Aradhana. It was Kishore who slowly became the voice for many rising stars like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Even Dev Anand’s voice was slowly replaced by the flamboyant singer, despite the memorable hits they churned out together for Navketan, composed by none other than the legendary SD Burman.

Yet, Rafi saab will be an inspiration for generations to come. The sonorous, melodious voice of Rafi will still make any romantic’s heart skip a beat and a vagabond masseur hum in glory.

  1. Kishore’s voice suited every singer — from Dev Anand to Amitabh Bachchan to Rishi Kapoor! As simple as that 🙂
